Actor’s Guide To Invasive Questions
If you’re an artist, writer, actor, or self-employed in any way, then I am sure someone has asked you some invasive questions. Generally, people mean well but when you’re constantly convincing yourself that you’re making good and responsible decisions it’s hard when other people ask the questions you’ve been thinking in your head all along. So what do you do when a simple question triggers so much history and self-criticism?
1. Don’t take it personally.
People are motivated to ask you how you make a living, what your real job is, and if you have a retirement plan for various reasons. None of those reasons have anything to do with you. When they ask you these questions it’s not about you, it’s about them. Maybe they wish they could’ve pursued their dreams, maybe they have a kid who wants to do the same thing, or maybe they’re just making conversation!
2. Remember why you chose this path.
Stand by your reasons for picking a tough, yet rewarding lifestyle. Remember that people will feed off of your reactions. Most of the time they want to relate to you so if they’re expecting that your life is hard and you’re making no money, they want you to concede to that narrative. However, if you share that you’re finding your success in your career I can guarantee you will catch people off guard.
3. Lie…or don’t.
You don’t owe anyone an explanation for how you live YOUR life, because it’s yours. Most people won’t fact-check you so you can say you’re working on something you can’t share yet. It will be true someday and you can call it manifesting! Or you can tell the truth and share your goals and dreams for the future. Choose whichever option protects your beautiful soul, we’re sensitive people, which makes us so special, so you can always make yourself the priority.
